In the battleground for driverless car technology, safety is paramount. That’s why Nauto is so disruptive. Using bi-directional cameras, a powerful AI engine and a suite of coaching tools, Nauto is making the technology safer and smarter than ever. Much more than a modern-day dashcam, its multi-sensor device detects potential collisions or dangerous distractions in advance (thus avoiding them), monitors risk and tracks cars’ behaviour in real time. If a car is involved in an accident, images and data about the incident are stored in the cloud, and can be shared with a fleet manager or driver via Nauto’s mobile app, which proves handy for resolving questions of liability. Although it can work with cars driven by people, it will also be invaluable when fleets of cars become self-driven.


While early smart car tech firms use expensive LiDar sensors to visually learn what’s going on around a vehicle, Nauto uses the type of image sensors found in “pro-sumer” cameras, alongside motion sensors, GPS systems and other components to gain situational awareness. By merging AI with dashcams, using a shared data platform and providing contextual event analysis, Nauto’s systems are making drivers and driverless cars much safer and smarter. 


68% of collisions are caused by distracted driving, with 1 in 4 of those caused by mobile phone use. Nauto claims they can reduce collision incidents by up to 37%.


The company has secured $173.9 million in funding since launching in 2015. Nauto’s most recent round, 2017’s Series B, raised $159m. They have a number of well-known backers, including General Motors Ventures, Softbank, BMW i Ventures and Greylock Partners.
