OpenClassrooms is the most popular open online course platform in France – and now provides degrees certified by the French state. Every month, 3 million users access OpenClassrooms. Although some choose smaller options, others follow one of the 30 bachelor and master degrees, which cover everything from web and mobile development to data management and marketing. All the teaching is done via the Internet.

As well as offering an education, OpenClassrooms has created a community of mentors to help their students. Although not cheap (roughly €300 per month), this route is much cheaper than attending a traditional university – and more flexible. The company has started working with companies directly and will even guarantee that their students will find a job. If a person is still unemployed six months after finishing, OpenClassrooms will refund the cost of the degree.

France has a big unemployment problem, with a quarter of its young people unemployed.

The company has received just under $70 million from 4 funding rounds, the latest of which was a $60m Series B in May 2018 led by General Atlantic. Other investors include Bpifrance, Alven Capital and Citizen Capital.
