Finding an alternative to plastic bags is a huge global challenge. EnviGreen Biotech has produced an innovative alternative made from natural starch and vegetable derivatives. All the 12 raw materials involved go through a complex six-step procedure to arrive at the end product, which dissipates when it hits hot water.

EnviGreen Biotech’s plastic-like bags are 100% organic and recyclable – and are edible for animals. The company also works with farmers in Karnataka, southern India, procuring their vegetable wastes and other raw materials. Founder Ashworth Hedge said: “In addition to becoming an alternate source of income for them, it also helps us bring down costs and make our products more affordable for the masses.”

The world’s annual consumption of plastic materials has increased from around 5 million tons in the 1950s to nearly 100 million tons today.

The self-funded startup, with a team of 90+, already has a foothold in the Middle East and is soon to enter the Indian market. It will also begin manufacturing biodegradable trash bags, oil sachets and packaging films.
